  • "I ordered the chicken roast and I would never order chicken in a restaurant before but I knew it would be a high quality from River Cottage. It didn't fail to please, lots of gravy and we go extra veg which wasn't put as an extra on the bill. The service was good too. Very happy and would recommend."

  • "This was not about food - although the food was excellent (probably the best Sunday Lunch we've ever had !!), melt in the mouth pork roast with fantastic fresh veg, chorizo stuffing balls in a mind-blowing gravy. It was not about the location - what a beautiful place, nestling in a scenic valley. It was not about roaming around the farm, taking pics of all those TV places and loving the pigs and cows before sitting down in the lovely high-ceilinged barn for lunch. It was about people ! The staff were really welcoming and friendly and the other 60 people there with us were all very nice. We were sitting next to people we'd never met and getting to know them over our relaxed 2 hour lunch. A truly memorable occasion."

  • "This was our third visit and it just gets better and better! My Husband and I shared a fish platter starter which was delicious in every way, then I had Pork belly cooked to melt in the mouth, while my Husband had steak, again cooked to perfection! Being indulgent we had a side of the nicest chips I've ever eaten! We finished with a chocolate mousse cake each and we both agreed it was the tastiest pud we've ever had! The service was brilliant and we love the rustic feel of the place. We have made it a tradition now to travel down for our Wedding Anniversary Meal every year! Cannot fault this place, thank you! :)"

  • "We were travelling nearby and onward into Devon so we booked because River Cottage has a brand name with a high profile. Our expectations were exceeded. The food was simply done but delicious and the care take in choosing the local ingredients shone through. Superb bread baked there and using their own from sourdough 'mother' - wonderful flavour and texture. Great range of soft drinks (so often a problem in restaurants). Service excellent. Want to go again and again!"

  • "A return visit x 3 this time with friends. A really special occasion - excellent food service and value. If only we didn't live so far away!"

  • " The Canteen is certainly different thanks to the factory like setting of the main dining area. The singer gave it a folksie atmosphere. Service was polite and prompt. I went for the mackerel with salad which was tasty and refreshing. My wife was disappointed with her choice of the summer soup. I tried it and had to agree. We went for the gnocchi dish and both found it to be tangy and satisfying. My wife approved of her sweet choice and my beetroot tart with chocolate was interesting. The chocolate creme fraiche was delicious but I was less keen on the texture of the beetroot. The bill came to £65. Reasonable enough for a special one-off occasion but we did think we were paying more for reputation than outstanding quality and value."

  • "Very disappointing travelled a long way to visit the canteen but didn't meet our expectations.although the food was good the overall experience was poor! Small portions for the price & no bread offered with meal just little things that could of made it better!! The atmosphere wasn't good staff were rushing around no chatting food not explained!just a very dissapointing £50 lunch!"

  • "We ate lunch at River Cottage on a Monday outside the school holidays, but it was surprisingly busy. Our server was very friendly, briefed herself on our dietary requirements (which we had specified on booking) and provided helpful advice. My vegetarian dishes were very good - cooked and raw courgette with toast; polenta with pesto - with extremely fresh and high quality ingredients. My coeliac father-in-law also had a choice of dishes, and enjoyed his fish starter and man course. My husband, an omnivore, found less on the menu to interest him though. The chocolate brownie dessert was delicious; the beetroot tart interesting, although on the small side. Overall the experience was very positive, although the ambience was a little noisy."

  • "The waiting staff couldn't have been more delightful or helpful and they more than anything else made this an enjoyable evening. The staff in the kitchen however seemed to be hamming it up just a bit too much - a bit less shouting would have given us more confidence that things were going well! We had to ask for bread to accompany the starter, a rather dull fish platter with kipper replacing mackeral, if I remember rightly. The food was certainly acceptable, but in no way outstanding, although the slow roast belly pork was beautifully tender. The accompanying veg was distinctly bland, but undoubtedly nice and fresh. Servings plenty large enough for us, so we didn't get as far as dessert. House wine definately below par."

  • "A very nice dinning experience, perhaps a little pricey for the amount of food we had but nevertheless great for a special treat."

  • "After promising ourselves a visit since last year we weren't disappointed. Great hospitality, great food and very helpful friendly staff. My friends food allergies didn't present any problems for them, and it was no trouble to change her fish board to incorporate gluten free bread and change fried fish in.breadcrumbs for mackerel strips.would definitely recommend a visit. It was a great experience."

  • "Having watched River Cottage episodes in Australia we were so glad the dining experience at River Cottage Canteen Axminster was such a good one. The setting was great, the service from Peeps and Jet(?)friendly and faultless; answering questions, making suggestions and of course the food delicious! Can highly recommend the fish broth; devine."

  • "Visited for a lunchtime pre booked meal. Was greeted promptly and shown to a table. Waiting staff quickly took drinks and food orders, sharing platter arrived quickly. Served on wooden platters with tiny plates !! Food quality was good, chips excellent, salad whilst has some brown 'stalk ends' was good, fish platter good but mackerel pate slightly runny and lacking in depth of flavour. Sweets excellent if a little pricey. Overall a very pleasing experience."

  • "After following Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's TV programmes about River Cottage from the inception it was great to find that my confidence in the style and quality of his food, restaurant and shop had not been misplaced. An unpretentious but characterful location and an interesting menu. When questioned about the ingredients the staff were keen to explain the provenance and specifics. I was surprised that they weren't more visible as this is such a basic of his "product". Each element and ingredient of the food worked and was well done. We were well looked after and enjoyed our two course lunch."

  • "We took friends to the Canteen on the 4th September 2014 for their first visit. Like us they were impressed by the relaxed, friendly atmosphere which along with great food made for a perfect evening."

  • "Initially our view was positive a very warm welcome on arrival and attentive staff, accommodated a table move with good service. Then we had a very long wait for food, people who arrived after us ordered and had eaten before our food arrived. I will be interested to see how many vegan, gluten free recipes are in Hugh book, as not a great choice in canteen. My carnivour companion was very pleased with selection and meal. The last dissapointment was when I asked for the remainder of my meal to take home, the most important part was not packed up, whether this had rolled off the plate on the way back to the kitchen, but why not tell me, on arrival at home to discover this I felt robed."

  • "We have regular visitors since moving to Beer earlier this year and usually try and include a visit to RC Canteen and Deli as a treat. We like Axminster and it also has the nearest Bank and good shopping. Hugh has done an amazing job with his team and it must be a massive asset to the area. Shall return. Erby and Veronica"

  • "The food was amazing. Staff very friendly and knowledgable . The tables and floor were all wooden and the chairs all mismatched which added to the ambience . Only thing that let it down was the service was slow. More staff needed. Would go again"

  • "Food is good but not brilliant, service was hit and miss, table was part cleared then she went and attended another table. It's ok for a once off meal for a treat but I wouldn't make it a regular eatery as there are better places"

  • "Axminster for birthday lunch for Jane on Sunday, with son and girlfriend, sister and brother in law, nephew and niece. Lovely meal, gorgeous cocktails, yummy coley fritters (I'm a sucker for a fish cake!) pork beautifully cooked, and the roasties........ To die for! Beetroot tart quirky but delicious, brownies from a chocolate heaven. Top notch service, great ambience, and not too horrendous a bill, we'll be back."

  • "Four of us chose to eat here for Sunday lunch. We ordered a mixture of the roast chicken and roast pork. Both were very tasty and well cooked. Our main concern was however - value for money. We are not sure how the restaurant justifies charging high end prices for very little food on the plate. We were given vegetables with the roast - Roast potatoes and cabbage only. We feel that a greater selection of vegetables could have been provided - given that the restaurant is called 'River Cottage'. Probably not worth us re-visiting."

  • "We had a lovely family evening meal here. It is child friendly. When asked, friendly staff provided crayons for our tot. Lovely ambiance. How lovely that they have a deli which you can purchase from afterwards! The menu is shorter than some other restaurants but this is outweighed by the fact that the food is imaginative, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Great efforts have been made to use locally sourced food so its a great recommendation for tourists as well as friends & family. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise was how fairly priced the food was considering its links to celebrity chef, HF-W. For this reason we wouldn't hesitate to go back and have already started recommending to our holiday guests. Well done!"

  • "Food was good and tasty, service was very attentive, cushions would have been welcome during a long lunch, There was not a vegetarian option available from the very limited menu, what there was was good though. The pannacotta desert was just sooooooo smooth."

  • "We were attended by a helpful and friendly young waitress, who answered all our questions knowledgeably. The food was delicious and well cooked....the wine gorgeous, and all local! We were celebrating an anniversary, and were delighted with the whole experience. I have to say that I ate the best steak I have ever tasted in all my 65 years, and left not a scrap on my plate, despite hating fat in all its forms!"

  • "Well trained, very natural staff and wonderful food, as always! Ambience is good, especially in the original back restaurant area - I find the music in the front part intrusive. There's always something different to try and even the dishes you've had before have a different twist. And there's all that with a very reasonable price for such top notch food."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at river cottage canteen in axminster. On receiving a warm, smiley welcome we were led to the simple, rustic yet charming dining area to our solid wooden table and were instantly comfortable in the tastefully lit country kitchen surroundings.Complementary yummy bread soon arrived along with water whilst we awaited our order. The shared meat platter, pork, rabbit, pidgeon was really tastey, the pidgeon led to a small squabble for the last bit.Mains of coley, fish broth, kids fish and chips and a porky, ginger spiced veg dish were all devoured with relish. The fish broth was very good indeed. No glitz here, just well presented delicious food cradled in a genuine dining experience.Fab"

  • "Overall we had a nice time and the food served was tasty. That said there are a couple of things that cant be forgiven; the meat board was the most misleading, for the cost of a main meal there was a distinct lack of meat and a disproportionate amount of lettuce! It really should have been called a lettuce board with meat garnish. It was all tasty which probably made it even more frustrating. The temperature in the dining room was through the roof as well, it definitely wasn't a blazing hot summers day but a combination of an open kitchen and it being busy made it quite uncomfortable for the entire party. Maybe if you sit in the rear dining room its better but in the deli it was roasting with a lack of ventilation."

  • "Second visit here and couldn't fault the food or service, only disappointment was we were seated in the deli area, feel the atmosphere is much nicer in the main restaurant area. However this didn't distract from our meals, which were amazing!"

  • "Sweet Jesus, the food was overwhelmingly superb. You really have to eat it to believe it. The waiters and waitresses were all great to talk to and they provided us with excellent service. It's such a great place to eat! If you're a food enthusiast, eat there. If you're planning a family meal, eat there. If you're hungry, eat there. I'd eat there for every meal if I could. HOW IS IT THAT GOOD? I just don't know. It's a mystery. Ask Hugh Fernley Whittingstal. Better yet, ask the young lads and lasses in the kitchen who slave all day and night making this food fit for the Gods. You know how much they get paid? £3 an hour. That's right! £3 an hour. How is that legal, you ask? One word: Apprenticeship. They are such troopers :')"

  • "The welcome staff were very good. The menu was limited, but we all enjoyed what we ordered. Didn't have to wait long and the staff were friendly and helpful. We were all cold when we first arrived, it was a wet day so that may gave been the reason. We didn't like the unisex toilet facilities ! Overall, a good experience."
