  • "First class service from start to finish, there but not in your face, and we were only asked once if we were enjoying our food. A band was playing as well an added bonus .The food was first class well cooked and a great menu at a good price. You can see the River cottage is not a franchise like other well known chefs.First class service"

  • "My husband and I were looking forward to a lovely meal for our anniversary and we left disappointed. My fish soup was very thick and my lamb was inedible-they very kindly did not charge us for it and the pudding was ok. My husband said his food was alright. We had both been looking forward to the meal and after watching the TV show we had high hopes. I could not fault the staff who were charming and looked after us well."

  • "Being a huge fan of River Cottage and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, we were very much looking forward to visit the River Cottage Canteen and we weren't disappointed! The food was fantastic, the service was excellent, and for the standard of food we enjoyed, it was very good value. Will be revisiting next time we go to Devon and very much looking forward to it."

  • "Service a little slow to start, but we really enjoyed the food. Great selection for veggies!"

  • "Great night out here will definitely be going again, food was excellent and live music created perfect atmosphere. All staff were very polite and friendly and very good value for money."

  • "Took some overseas visitors as somewhere special and they particularly wanted to sample lamb which was on the menu. Unfortunately on this evening they had run out of lamb early on and the only other meat dishes were chaps and beef cheeks. Somehow the ambience previously experienced was missing, service was perfunctory and the food not as good quality or as well cooked. Lot's of little problems which conspired to a mediocre experience."

  • "Had a great evening the whole experience really lived up to expectation -great value, great service, great food an a really enjoyable evening - cannot wait to visit again - thanks river cottage"

  • "There really is nothing bad to say about River Cottage. The food was excellent (although not outstanding) and its great to know all the veg and meat is of a high and ethical standard. It is pricey, with a two course roast dinner plus drinks costing £50 ish, but that is the cost of high welfare meat in a restaurant. The staff are outstanding, friendly, happy, relaxed and always on hand. Remember to book, as it was very full."

  • "We go a few times a year - it's always a great experience. Service is properly warm and efficient. Food is beautifully prepared and always has interesting flavours without being overworked. Great to know meat is free range and the vegetarian options always match the quality of meat and fish dishes - rarely the case in most restaurants."

  • "I had always wanted to go to river cottage but wasn't sure about the food for my children, so we went on our own for Sunday lunch when we had a weekend to ourselves and it was fab, and we will definatly be going back with our Children."

  • "Unfortunately our experience didn't live up to expectations. The service was good and the staff friendly but the meal itself was only average, not what we expected from River Cottage."
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "Starters of fish soup & crab on toast were good, as was the pannacotta desert. However, all 4 mains were disappointing, particularly the lamb, which was tough despite slow cooking. The roast cauliflower & chickpea curry was tepid & no advance on home- cooked food and both fish dishes looked a mess & sauces overwhelmed the delicate flavour of the fish."

  • "I booked Axminster for my mums birthday meal as we were down for a few days in Weymouth as she's been ill and I've always been an avid river cottage supporter so i have to be honest with this as much as it frustrates me so here goes , restaurant positives , as a whole the staff were helpful the restaurant was clean and the service was friendly great selection of local organic goods out front if you should want it negatives Im 6,4 tall 19 stone and small wooden chairs really doesn't make for a comfortable dinning experience not everyone is small or average in build i don't expect to find one inch pieces of wood /dried stalk in fishcakes or wait for drinks for 25mins in a restaurant of this standard"

  • "This is was the second occasion I had been to the river cottage canteen. And went for Mother's Day. The service was great as before and so was the food. Had the fishcake which was amazing but there was also so much more on the menu I wanted! (Greedy) overall another great experience at the river cottage canteen. Thank you"

  • "I've dined at River Cottage Canteen in Axminster several times before, and always enjoyed it. This time, when I booked there was a message saying that there would be a quiz on the night, but the date in question was my only option so I booked a table anyway, making it earlier than planned to try and avoid the quiz. On arriving we were shown to a table, which turned out to be in the midst of the area used for the later quiz. We could have been asked if we intended to take part, and offered a table further away if not. The quiz, when it started, was very intrusive and spoiled our experience - we were meeting up after a long time and we wanted to talk, not answer silly quiz questions. It has put me off the place, which is a shame."

  • "It was with some trepidation that we booked to have Sunday lunch out with two children temporarily in our care. In the event it was an hour and a half of heaven, a resounding success! Menu choices were ideal, waitress was very child friendly and helpful, service and presentation excellent - not a scrap was left on any of the plates! The peaceful, calm, ambience created by the singer added to the experience and we all enjoyed a fantastic dining experience."

  • "My husband and I attended the special fish night with Tim at River Cottage Axminster. From the moment we walked in up until we walked out we felt special. The staff couldn't do enough for us. The food was truly wonderful and the talk and demonstration by Tim was brilliant. He took time to visit each table and talk to the guests and even gave us a taste of the fish he had prepared. We are going back to the next special night."

  • "River Cottage Canteen has local, organic and importantly very tasty food. Great service but it can get noisy on a busy Sunday lunch."
    dined on 23/03/2014
  • "Whilst we have long been fans of Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall's, we have never been able to afford the real experience of HQ. The canteen offers an entirely affordable way of enjoying the same philosophy."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "Great food with warm service. Well presented and hearty portions, a shared starter, a main each and shared cheese was more than enough for two of us. Lovely ambiance even though the restaurant wasn't full, I am actively looking to return and find a night with music and take a group of friends. My only confusion is it wasn't packed, It should be the food is great and it is good value in my humble opinion"

  • "Not on the menu, but well worth a visit! Interesting and very tasty food. Excellent draft beer from the Bay Brewery. Very enjoyable."
    dined on 19/03/2014
  • "I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and atmosphere at the restaurant and would definitely come back! I liked that the Sunday roast was not served on one plate resembling a food mountain, but was instead delicately arranged and much more enjoyable to eat and look at. The only point that prevents me from giving all five stars is that both the lamb and the pork was a tiny bit dry, however it did not ruin my experience."
    dined on 16/03/2014
  • "I am sure the food was tasty and well presented(except the burnt toast); we were served by friendly, competent staff and we enjoyed the busy atmosphere. However I was still a bit hungry after 3 courses and didn't really feel I was getting value for money. We probably will come back but the jury's out at the moment."

  • "Food very good and the FB Pocket Orchestra were fantastic !!"
    dined on 13/03/2014
  • "We have always wanted to go here and were not disappointed. Lovely food and atmosphere. The menu was full of fresh seasonal produce. We both had the pork belly and mustard pears to start, it melted in the mouth and had a lovely fruity contrast. My wife's lamb was very tasty and rich. The polenta and kale lasagne was the best vegetarian meal I've had in a restaurant for a long long time. It was delicious (and I'm a carnivore!). The pannacotta and truffles were a lovely way to finish. The service was fantastic too. We will make sure we come again if we are in the area."
    dined on 12/03/2014
  • "Lovely greeting, food delicious, busy Saturday night atmosphere, service efficient although strident waitress not interested in our replies to her questions, spoke to us as though talking to a five year old and bumped into my chair twice without acknowledging it."
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "Very nice time with lovely food but felt it was a bit expansive for what we had (Sunday Lunch). Service was excellent and very friendly. Good menu with plenty to choose from with maybe a roast for vegetarians required. Would recommended but with the fact that it is expensive."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "We've been to the Canteen for dinner many times and have always had good food and an enjoyable evening. This also meant we were on their mailing list and receive marketing emails frequently. Given it is the low season, we took up the Feb/March offer to have Sunday lunch where a child's main course is free with an adult's main course. However the portions of both the child's main and the adult's main were absolutely tiny. I'm not comparing this to a vast great Sunday lunch, I just mean in comparison to a normal meal; the two mains added together barely made up a single course. This felt like a pure rip off and abuse of people's trust in what is otherwise a lovely restaurant."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "This is only the second time that I have visited River Cottage; the food is delicious and amazingly reasonaably priced. Would recommend this to everyone. Also you must visit the Deli on your way out."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "Four of us, two vegan, tow vegetarians booked for first veggie night. Food very tasty, if small portions. Good choice. It would have been useful for vegan options to be marked, and for the waitress/ers to be well informed of options. On a couple of occassions there were mistakes, ie including dairy dip for vegan when it was requested to be omited, and omiting the polenta cake with the poached pear, when it was requested! However, we appreciate the effort of making an exclusive veggie night."
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "Only meat option was bath chap (pig cheek) or braised beef cheek. Horrible cuts of meat. Some variety would have been nice. Started and dessert excellent, ambience and service was great."
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "We visited en famille, nice table and starters were interesting and tasty. Five of us had beef cheeks, I had had them before and they had been delicious. This time they were just bitter and tasted off. Mentioned this to the waitress who said that perhaps the beef was too well hung... We should have persisted, but left it at that. Two main courses were taken off our bill, not five, and we did not eat them. The puddings were delicious, but a bit slow in arriving. Don't think we will return. We were very disappointed."
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "The waitress was very pleasant and friendly. Background music intrusive. Iman Biyaldi starter was fine, but caulliflower pakora had plain batter with none of the spices which I would have expected from a pakora. Main course - fishcakes -were bland and too large, resulting in a unbalanced, dull and heavy meal, Something juicy and colourful with one better quality, tasty fishcake and accompanying salad would have been much better. The braised beef cheek was tender as the waitress described but was fatty and the kale was gritty. The horseradish mash was the only part of the dish I enjoyed. Draught bitter had little flavour and was expensive for draught beer. Wine was good. Can eat well locally for much less - poor value at this price."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "We went for the Thursday night special with a restricted menu. We chose some of the dishes I had eaten before but this time they were disappointing- fishcakes a bit overcooked, rocket with everything, careless presentation of the dessert, altogether I couldn't recommend the special offer- try again on a Friday or Saturday a la carte- maybe the chef is different"
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "Lovely local produce on the menu. Service was very friendly and efficient. We tried the organic sparkling wine which was very good. The portion is very good and the same goes for the price! We will definitely go back!"
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "Could not have had a better ambience with the waiting staff attending to every detail. Food was delightful, plenty to choose from with textures and taste being second to none. A perfect way to say thank you to my lovely husband for all his does!"
