Diner Reviews
  • "This was our third visit. Our first for dinner and our first taking along another couple. Thankfully, they were as impressed as we were. We all shared the problem I always seem to have - settling on a choice. Our final selections included two unadventurous steak and chips: but what meat! what chips! what aioli! what dressing on the leaves! Other highlights included English polenta croquettes, cucumber and gooseberry gazpacho, Lyme Bay fish and shellfish broth and stew, rhubarb jelly and ice cream and chocolate marquise. Service was slow to get started, but was then delightful throughout the evening. Can't comment on the cost, because our guests generously paid. They thought it great value - and they are very discerning."

  • "We went down to Somerset for a couple of days tayloring our trip around a visit to the River Cottage Restaurant. We weren't disappointed, it was worth the trip. We all had different food and we all enjoyed everything we had from fish to meat. We wish there was one nearer to us and we will definitely return at some future date."

  • "We four enjoyed our lunch at River Cottage Axminster on Tuesday 22nd July which was our first visit. We all had fish and chips, very tasty and nicely cooked, the fish was lovely and fresh and batter extremely light, we complimented the chefs on the way out. During our lunch we were served by a delightful girl called Stephanie, she was so attentive and smiled continuously which pleased us a lot, do pass this on to her."

  • "The menu was limited and cakes were not fresh. The overall look of the canteen was lovely but the poor quality of the some of the food was unexpected"

  • "We had the most wonderful evening. Everything was perfect from the welcome when we arrived to paying at the end. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. And it didn't break the bank. We particularly liked the relaxed casual atmosphere. Thank You."

  • "Did have a lovely lunch on the19th, but thought there could be more meat options on the menu. The Gooseberry dessert although delicious was very overpriced"

  • "Just had a superb lunch at River Cottage Deli in Axminster in order to celebrate my partner's birthday. The meal I had was locally sourced whiting and chips with gorgeous local large salad leaves. It tasted superb and cooked perfectly. For desert we shared Gooseberry frumble which was a mix of crumble and fool with tasty crunchy bits throughout. My partner had a gorgeous veg option of gnocchi and salad and we both enjoyed a coffee to finish. I think the nicest touch was the team bringing desert with a candle burning to celebrate my partner's birthday, but keeping it low key as she didn't want to be embarassed with singing happy birthday or anything like that. Perfect from the River Cottage team!"

  • "Very much enjoyed our meal, food was great and the staffs were very friendly and helpful. Visited on a Thursday evening, wasn’t too busy had a local singer which made fo a great atmosphere. Would and have recommended it to others."

  • "Overall a nice meal, great to see so much local produce on the menu and the interior is lovely. The menu was quite small as where the portions but the quaility was good. My steak was over cooked but this was soon rectified, the staff could have been more knowledgeable about the food as we had a couple of questions which went un-answered. A nice experience but I don't think we would go again."

  • "we had an amazing dining experience at river cottage - very friendly and helpful staff - a varied selection of menu - really thought out drinks selection - really good use of local produce and a great meal value for money and a relaxed atmosphere"

  • "Every time we eat at River Cottage, we enjoy the friendly service, the good cooking and the locally sourced food. And the set price meals are really good value."

  • "Sadly our experience was really disappointing. The starters and wine were lovely but our mains took at least half an hour to turn up and when they did all four dishes were less than average. We had lamb and pork roasts and all of the meat was dry. It looked and tasted like it had been sitting on the side for ages. We would have sent it back if we hadn't had to wait so long in the first place."

  • "Booking for noon and not allowed in to main resturant till noon. Sunday roast was to die for really lovely, very tender meat full of flavour. Disappointed with 'sharing dessert' it was simply two single portions of dry chocolate brownie on a single platter, was expecting a large dish of sticky chocolate brownie to share with 2 spoons. My son loved the dairy free chocolate flapjack, not sure if this was on menu as a result of my request for dairy free dessert or not, the other option rhubarb jelly would have been too sharp for him. Serving staff very good with toddlers. Would go back again but not have dessert. Take away bars/cakes from deli were delicious and very good value better than the dessert, had them the next day with coffee."

  • "the dining experience was everything we expected. Building was perfect and decoration spot on. Service was second to none and the main course beautifully cooked. The only negative was the soup, it was luke warm but did taste wonderful. Look forward to coming again when in the area."

  • "Fantastic food and friendly staff. Welcoming and warm atmosphere even on a busy night. 2 young pre school children were well catered for & serivice was excellent . would definitely recommend River cottage canteen and will visit again with no hesitation."

  • "Our plan was to have set menu but choice was limited and did not appeal. Instead we chose from main menu and had very good fish and pork dishes. We only had two courses the desserts seemed a little expensive and given their deli was open with 10% discount on that day decided to take away some cheese and cakes to have back at hotel which were very good indeed. Overall great restaurant with really good atmosphere/staff -the open kitchen fun to watch and deli and shop as you enter add to interest and ambience our only slight reservation would on the cost but given quality of food well worth visit."

  • "Everything tasted so natural and fresh. No cutting corners at this place. Great service too! Definitely returning!"

  • "The canteen is exactly what you can see on TV in the River Cottage series. Service was excellent, dishes as well. The menu is quite limited, dishes are either vegeterian or too spicy, we could very hardly find one for my daughter who does not like lamb, chili and such stuff. We arrived to the canteen after driving very long, with big expectations but left it a bit unsatisfied."

  • "Delicious spiced lamb, freshly baked bread, wonderful herby salads, gooseberry fumble to die for, and the strawberry bellinis got us off to a good start. And the chips! A great relaxed place with excellent service."

  • "We had lunch at the Canteen with friends. The atmosphere was great and our waiter was friendly and cheerful and very quick and efficient. He knew the menu well and was able to speak about each dish. We were given tempting focaccia and dipping oil to start. Two of us then followed this up with "pulled lamb bap" which was in effect a fancy lamb burger which was also in focaccia. It was really nice but the combination of focaccia and chips was just too heavy and unbalanced. Great if you like to feel bloated! We then discussed the merits of Cortado vs Macchiato with the waiter who made the best compromise I've had at the Canteen. Great place to go."

  • "After wanting to visit for a very long time , we finally dined at River Cottage Canteen Axminster. Our food was great , the service was perfect and it would be somewhere that we would visit regularly - if we didn't live almost 200 miles away !!!! The restaurant was very busy but staff were very attentive even though there was a bit of a wait for our starters to arrive . The wait was worth it - everything was perfectly cooked , fresh and generous in portion size. I recommend people to go - but do book or you just won't get in . Its that popular ."

  • "Had an outstanding meal a year ago at the River Cottage Canteen in Axminster which was excellent in terms of all food, service and ambience. 2nd visit was good, nice and busy, super friendly service staff and food very high quality. Of the five portions (three starters, one main course one pudding), the crab starter was excellent, very good indeed, the Mackerel with a gooseberry and cucumber salsa was, ever so slightly undercooked (both portions) lacking in seasoning and not enough gooseberry flavour (as a Mackerel can really hold a sweet/sour accompaniment). The pea shoots with it were very nice. The main course of blue cheese croquets were truly outstanding! Chocolate brownie was adequate. Star of the meal was the warm bread/oil!"

  • "Just my wife and I out for a rare evening meal. Food was very good and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Busy bustling atmosphere that works well in the large almost factory like setting. Considering HFW's reputation he has not been tempted to charge high prices. The drinks menu was also reasonably priced. Nice to be able to see the kitchen in action also. Can recommend the fish courses. My wife enjoyed her veggie main although she is not a vegetarian."

  • "Poor service, very limited lunch menu. Chips that had always been exceptionally good we're poor and like bad chip shop chips. Portion sizes also seemed to have reduced considerably. Only redeeming feature was the jelly! We live locally and visit regularly. This was a return visit with friends who enjoyed it so much last time they mentioned licking the plates. This time it was embarrassing !"

  • "Having enjoyed Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's books and newspaper recipes we were looking forward to visiting one of his restaurants. We were disappointed. Although we enjoyed our starters, we felt the mains were not up to scratch. In particular my braised lamb shoulder seemed tasteless and my husband's hollandaise sauce separated. On pointing out the problem with the sauce, the waitress did apologise but nothing was offered in compensation. We felt that the restaurant rides on the reputation of its founder but does not live up to expectations. We would not recommend it."

  • "Our first experience at River Cottage was horrific. This time however the experience was very much better. Food and service very good. The only downside was the 40 minute wait between Starter and Main course. I am glad we gave it another try."

  • "Bit disappointed with lunch, we had made a point of visiting on our trip to the UK. The freshly baked bread with olive oil was great but I did notice that the waitress had to cut out a doughy wet centre of the loaf. I had the lamb burger and the bun seemed dry and wasn't that enjoyable, the meat pattie was OK but not overly flavoursome. My partner had the whiting and it certainly isn't the type of whiting we enjoy in Australia. We didn't bother to stay for dessert. Overall we thought it was over rated and expensive."

  • "My wife and I had lunch at the River Cottage Canteen and found the food quite special: a clean taste, light dressings on salad, obviously fresh ingredients. The staff were very helpful and positive. Don't come here if you are after stodge!"

  • "We travelled from Ireland to enjoy a short break in Dorset, and were delighted to get a table at river cottage canteen(Axminster) for one of our evening meals! The whole experience was awesome, the food was amazing and great value, for money, the ambience was simple elegance, and our waiter(will) was so at ease making sure we enjoyed our meal . we really admire the ethos of sustainable ingredients being used alongside traceability and seasonal produce. we rounded off our evening buying presents to take home and treating ourselves to some cookbooks, (10%)discount as we had eaten. The simple, unpretencious experience has left us looking forward to our next trip."

  • "Having always enjoyed Hugh's River Cottage ethos, and the Canteen's lovely simple food at Buckham Fair a couple of years ago, we were very disappointed with our experience of lunch on Tuesday. Whilst the waiting staff were attentive and helpful, there was an air of tension (possibly distress?) throughout, probably worsened by a number of diner's complaints of missing food, lost orders, delays, etc etc. It appeared that the kitchen was overwhelmed, and it showed! Our meals were overly dressed with an oily pesto sauce, the aoli apparently contained no garlic, the mackerel was well cooked but with a flaccid skin and oozing oil in addition to the oily pesto on top, and there were no discernible pea shoots in the pea shoot salad!"

  • "We follow Hughs progress and views and are in Dorset on Holiday and were really looking forward to trying out the restaurant, we pre booked the night before a table for 3 at 12pm, arrived at 12, had a starter at 12.30, then had no main until 13.50 and when it came it was dissapointing. When i spoke with manager she said its because everyone came in at once, i explained thats generally what happens at meal times. She knocked off 1 starter and a pudding, we were not the only ones miffed."

  • "We had lunch here on a Monday at the end of June to celebrate my first day of retirement, and it is certainly a meal we will not forget!! A very wide menu with a choice of smaller or larger portion meals all made with local, well provenanced ingredients and absolutely delicious. The dessert of blackberry posset was outstanding. We will be going back for another visit soon- even if it is a 150 mile round trip!!!"

  • "Rather disappointing. Food quite dried up - when we walked past the serving counter the food was sat n top looking dried up. Thought the veg might have a 'twist' to them but very ordinary, I put in more effort at home. In summary it was just an extremely expensive Sunday lunch! I completely understand and appreciate what it is trying to achieve regarding atmosphere but really disappointed with food. It was my husband's 60th - wish I had chosen elsewhere."

  • "I am an avid fan of River Cottage on ABC TV in Australia and visited the HQ for the event with Marcus du Sautoy on Thursday 26 June - which was brilliant - and great food, well presented. As a result I thought I would book online to go to the River Cottage Axminster Canteen and Deli - it did not disappoint! The first course I chose was Roast Beetroot Gazpacho soup with herb yoghurt and Beetroot chips - a taste sensation. Followed by Ruby Red steak with seasonal vegetables and side order of steamed greens. Again tasty delicious food. They cook steak medium rare automatically, which is how I like it! Dessert was raspberry and elderflower jelly with three raspberries and a leaf of mint and vanilla ice cream - a perfect end to a perfect meal."
