Diner Reviews
  • "Good, wholesome food with a clean palate. Very enjoyable"
    dined on 31/08/2014
  • "Four of us chose to eat here for Sunday lunch. We ordered a mixture of the roast chicken and roast pork. Both were very tasty and well cooked. Our main concern was however - value for money. We are not sure how the restaurant justifies charging high end prices for very little food on the plate. We were given vegetables with the roast - Roast potatoes and cabbage only. We feel that a greater selection of vegetables could have been provided - given that the restaurant is called 'River Cottage'. Probably not worth us re-visiting."

  • "We had a lovely family evening meal here. It is child friendly. When asked, friendly staff provided crayons for our tot. Lovely ambiance. How lovely that they have a deli which you can purchase from afterwards! The menu is shorter than some other restaurants but this is outweighed by the fact that the food is imaginative, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Great efforts have been made to use locally sourced food so its a great recommendation for tourists as well as friends & family. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise was how fairly priced the food was considering its links to celebrity chef, HF-W. For this reason we wouldn't hesitate to go back and have already started recommending to our holiday guests. Well done!"

  • "Food was good and tasty, service was very attentive, cushions would have been welcome during a long lunch, There was not a vegetarian option available from the very limited menu, what there was was good though. The pannacotta desert was just sooooooo smooth."

  • "We were attended by a helpful and friendly young waitress, who answered all our questions knowledgeably. The food was delicious and well cooked....the wine gorgeous, and all local! We were celebrating an anniversary, and were delighted with the whole experience. I have to say that I ate the best steak I have ever tasted in all my 65 years, and left not a scrap on my plate, despite hating fat in all its forms!"

  • "Well trained, very natural staff and wonderful food, as always! Ambience is good, especially in the original back restaurant area - I find the music in the front part intrusive. There's always something different to try and even the dishes you've had before have a different twist. And there's all that with a very reasonable price for such top notch food."

  • "Overall we had a nice time and the food served was tasty. That said there are a couple of things that cant be forgiven; the meat board was the most misleading, for the cost of a main meal there was a distinct lack of meat and a disproportionate amount of lettuce! It really should have been called a lettuce board with meat garnish. It was all tasty which probably made it even more frustrating. The temperature in the dining room was through the roof as well, it definitely wasn't a blazing hot summers day but a combination of an open kitchen and it being busy made it quite uncomfortable for the entire party. Maybe if you sit in the rear dining room its better but in the deli it was roasting with a lack of ventilation."

  • "Second visit here and couldn't fault the food or service, only disappointment was we were seated in the deli area, feel the atmosphere is much nicer in the main restaurant area. However this didn't distract from our meals, which were amazing!"

  • "Great food and ambiance, service was OK but table hadn't been prepared fully and although the food was superb, a little pricey.."

  • "lovely waitress who couldn't do enough for us and good wholesome tasty food, as you'd expect from the brand."
    dined on 25/08/2014
  • "The welcome staff were very good. The menu was limited, but we all enjoyed what we ordered. Didn't have to wait long and the staff were friendly and helpful. We were all cold when we first arrived, it was a wet day so that may gave been the reason. We didn't like the unisex toilet facilities ! Overall, a good experience."

  • "Good solid wholesome meals. Service a little lacking."
    dined on 24/08/2014
  • "We booked lunch here for 3pm which is the latest you can book. We arrived at 3.10pm as we had encountered loads of bank holiday traffic but still had to park our campervan somewhere! This wasn't a problem at all for the staff who were only too happy to serve us the 'last lunch'. It was delicious, we have been a couple of times before and were really looking forward to it. We really appreciated the helpful friendly staff who were on that day, nothing was too much trouble and they could've easily turned us away as were were late. Thank you to all of you!"

  • "First visit to Axminster location and having visited Plymouth in 2013 we were looking forward to our luncheon being the flagship however sadly, came away with the thought 'that was OK'. Sadly we felt that Plymouth had much more food choice and flavour which Axminster lacked"

  • "Full again, delicious. Eating 3 courses is quite a challenge :)"

  • "Prompt, friendly, knowledgeable and spot on service. Very enjoyable surroundings-relaxed, fun!"

  • "Great friendly service, fantastic food, an all round thoroughly enjoyable dining experience - worthy of it's reputation!"

  • "Food was lovely except for the chicken bap which was very average (noting special. The fish broth was delicious. Desserts were nice too."
    dined on 20/08/2014
  • "so satisfied that we booked second dinner-date on the spot. Very good regional ingredients with modern recipes, the relatively small menu is not a problem at all!. We could barely manage a 3 course meal on first evening, so had very good chips for starters second time around: crushed potatoes, spinach and pickled cucumber go especially well with the fish. The pork dishes are highly recommended"
    dined on 19/08/2014
  • "Relaxed atmosphere, roast potatoes were amazing and also nice to get a 10 per cent discount for the deli as the pies are fantastic too"
    dined on 17/08/2014
  • "The food was excellent as you would expect, however we did wait 20 minutes before being served, although it was very busy. Also the portion sizes vary considerably. We had two Sunday dinners , one pork and one chicken. The chicken came with a portion of breast and a thigh, whilst the pork came with two thin slices. Although excellent, I feel for nearly £15 they could give you a bit more pork . The beef dripping roast potatoes were probabaly the best I've ever eaten That said, the food was amazing and the ambience was also excellent. Will definitely return, however would probably do evening meal as opposed to Sunday dinner"

  • "We met to introduce great-nan to her great-granddaughters and so party ages ranged from 0-74 and there was something for everyone. The food was lovely. A good children's menu was available and although the portions looked small on arrival all kids had plenty to eat. There was a good range including lots of veggie options. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The restaurant was geared to families and group dinning, however the acoustics weren't great and there was a lot of echoing and it became quite noisy - the open roof, open kitchen and large open plan layout looked good but did not help with this."
    dined on 17/08/2014
  • "The whole evening was very enjoyable with accomplished service in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. We all enjoyed great food trying things from the sharing platters that we'd never had before. The main meal was equally good with good sized portions and nice presentation. At the end of the evening we felt we had had terrific value for money"
    dined on 16/08/2014
  • "We live locally and have used the restaurant before. Brought friends for their first visit and they liked what they found and will visit again. We had the meat platters which were excellent, as was the house wine. We look forward to our next visit."
    dined on 15/08/2014
  • "Great use of subtle flavours giving very tasty and visually appealing meals. Highly recommend it. Meals are reasonably priced despite the link to writer and broadcaster Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, which is a definite plus compared to some restaurants with a celebrity associated with them. Really good atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit!"

  • "Great atmosphere - nice way to spend an evening - recommend to all"

  • "Recently on holiday we decided to give River Cottage Canteen a try. Our whole visit was met with prompt, excellent and friendly service with great knowledge of menu. Best we've had anywhere in a long time, service was busy too! Our food was very tasty as was the blueberry G&T 😀"

  • "After a wonderful lunch two days earlier, we decided to come back again to try some of the other items on the menu. Again, we were not disappointed. Same friendly and attentive service, similar difficult decisions on what to eat (especially as the menu had changed slightly) and another deliciously satisfying meal full of fresh ingredients. After starting with the gorgeous cake-like foccacia with onion, dipped in oil, all 3 of us chose the fish broth. Clearly cooked to order, the mussels were fabulous and the rest of the fish rich and flavoursome. But, aadly, no fresh salad leaves this time! I am delighted to find the values that HF-W epitomises on TV carried through into his restaurant. I can't wait to come back here again!"

  • "Booked a table at River Cottage Canteen, Axminster, in June to celebrate our daughter's A level results. Great food and atmosphere; casual but top quality and the waiting staff had a good knowledge about what they were serving. A* experience to match the A* results!"
    dined on 14/08/2014
  • "Had high expectations of River Cottage Canteen but to be honest the food was of average pub standard and the services was mediocre. The childrens menu is limited and whilst my hungry 3 year old did eat her lunch, those with fussier children may struggle."

  • "Fantastic dinner with great service. Love the boozy truffles!"
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "Good food, nice restaurant, friendly atmosphere. Good night out"
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "Casual dining with excellent local produce. Very strong on starters, mains and sharing platters and a little less so on the pud section. We liked the informal and friendly ambiance and the easy going staff. The canteen has a strong pull factor to bring tourists in from far afield and plenty of locals. The food is presented simply and to show off the freshness and focus on the best ingredients. Good choice of wines, beers, ciders and non alcholic drinks for the drivers.Do give it a try if you are in the vicinity."
    dined on 13/08/2014
  • "Had an enjoyable evening at this upbeat and buzzy restaurant - We were staying in Dorset for a few days and I was glad I booked in advance - it was packed on a Tuesday evening - in contrast to the rest of quiet Axminster! Good food overall - I wasn't over keen on the mackerel starter but the pollock main course was enjoyable and my husband thought the beef rump was superb. Would thoroughly recommend the truffle dessert - three indulgent and delicious chocolate truffles with a cider brandy and a coffee. Although a limited menu I was pleasantly surprised at the prices, particularly for the main courses - not overpriced and a chance to try something different. We had very friendly and good service from our waitress and liked the cider!"
    dined on 12/08/2014
  • "Service was poor with long waits. Salad was served in bowls previously used for chips and not cleaned afterwards as chip fragments remained. Smallish portions for the price, worse still, lacking somewhat in flavour and excitement! Used drinks glasses not cleared away promptly (left on table throughout the meal.) Fresh vegetables used in a stir fry were good though. This venue basks in the reputation of its creator. Previous visits have been well worthwhile. An off-day perhaps this time?"

  • "Very enjoyable way to spend our child free day on holiday. Had fab food and very relaxed surroundings and people watching :) Lovely friendly staff."
    dined on 12/08/2014
  • "Fantastic food, very good value, excellent service. We'll definitely be back."
    dined on 12/08/2014
  • "Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. The service was excellent and we were well looked after. The children were made to feel very welcome. We ate at lunchtime, the food was very good indeed. The desserts really topped it all off."
    dined on 12/08/2014
  • "This is not the actual River Cottage (that's on the way to Lyme Regis and doesn't do lunch) but a restaurant and deli run by them. And what a wonderful place it is! We ate in the back room, which felt like it had previously been a small factory but we later learned was actually a local dance hall. The service was attentive and friendly and the short menu full of enticing options. In the end, unable to choose, 3 of us went for the sharing plates (either 3 meat dishes or 3 fish dishes) and 1 for the merguez chicken bap. Silence, followed by oohs and ahs tells you eveything you need to know about how good it was. And, as for the salad leaves, well they were so good that even my husband liked them! Yum!!"

  • "You can rely on RCC to provide fresh and interesting ingredients and combine them in novel ways, for example lifting what is essentially fish & chips onto another level. The service is always friendly, if not always 100% efficient.. The ambience is simple and noisy, it is after all a canteen. The chairs are a bit hard but the tables are a decent size so you shouldn't feel cramped. It's advisable to book at predictably busy times and get there a bit early as parking is limited nearby."
