  • "We had a fabulous meal and the service was excellent. The vegetables were first class."

  • "Our first visit was a great experience. Food was very well prepared and not your normal restaurant choices so wonderful to try things like cuttlefish and ox cheeks , friendly (both waiting staff and chefs) and efficient service and pretty good value for the quality and quantity. A big thumbs up from us."

  • "We had to wait some time to place our food order Two of us ha dRabbit Stew with bacon and turnips It was rather tasteless, tepid in temperature and over cooked"

  • "We had read previous reviews about slow service but found the food arrived in good time. The food was well cooked and very good. We were able to have all 3 courses and enjoyed the fact that we were able to choose options that we would not normally see."

  • "sort the staff out, she didn't reflect the efficiency that you try and portray.having eaten here about 2 yrs ago, we were really looking forward to a top quality lunch. how disappointed were we! the waitress was so full of herself, that she didn't feel the need to work at an efficient pace, struting about like a pea-hen, who had obviously not of rushing. The front of house manager [?] who walked us to our table had explained that a party of 22 were ahead of us, so there may be a delay. This wasn't the problem, the menus arrived, the waitress didn't. we wanted to order drinks, no waitress. what was suitable fort a veggie, no waitress to ask. Starters/sharing plate arrives, had to ask for bread deep fried roasters!!!!"

  • "This is our second visit to the Canteen, excellent food as before staff attentive and helpful. Would definately visit again. Please do not visit the Canteen if you are expecting cheap fast food because this would not be the place for you."

  • "Excellent food and service with excellent vegetarian dishes."
    dined on 17/10/2014
  • "We enjoyed a delicious light lunch at The River Cottage in Axminster. Delicious bread and dipping oil was presented while we waited for the main event which was a unctuous squash soup and a crab salad. Both were first rate. Some great organic beers and ciders were also available. Well worth the trip. Just a mention for the coffee too which was excellent!"
    dined on 17/10/2014
  • "Absolutely delicious food, superb friendly and efficient service, but the size of "bigger" portions is inconsistent: my gurnard with chickpeas was far smaller than my friend's merguez/lamb burger & chips - and I had to steal half of her burger-bun to mop up the delicious juices (chickpeas were nicely al dente, so unsuitable for mopping purposes)"
    dined on 17/10/2014
  • "We have eaten before, bu unfortunately this time, no one had a dish that really felt complete or worked, and some of the food was just poor. The Gurnard fillet I had was overcooked by a long way, and it sat on top of chickpeas which were badly cooked and seasoned and some bits of chorizo. It was strange and I would have thought it a one-off but there was a similar story with others we ate with - really poor soup which was not seasoned at all and didn't taste at all of squash, another overcooked fish dish and a fairly boring rabbit stew. The sides like bread, chips and salad were nice, but obviously that's not why you go there. The staff were fine, but not particularly friendly, and I was a bit embarrassed for building it up to my family."

  • "we had a very nice lunch there this week. food was good, and at a great price, good service, not too many people there, would have been nice though"
    dined on 15/10/2014
  • "Although we enjoyed the food it was no better than our own Sunday Lunch. The venue is terrific and it is encouraging to eat ingredients that are Provenanced. Staff were helpful (the recommendation of local cider was excellent) but our coffee came 15 minutes before our pudding which was irritating. Other pluses; the menu range is small but well appointed, they offer tap water, it's great for kids, there's loads of space for disabled. Other minuses; we believe our own local free range pork to be better quality, the chicken and pork were a little dry. We dined using a voucher given to us by our family and the place is such good value that we can afford to go again using the other half. We'd love to give this restaurant a go in the evening."

  • "This was our 6th visit we bought 4 friends with us, have always loved our visit, however would go again.... The menu was not over seasonal, the service was slow to the point by the time the side of chips came out all mains were finished!!! The waitress said she would take one of the largers of the bill (it didnt taste good) she didnt. I had the slow cooked beef for £18. It was lovely and soft fell apart but was tasteless!! I ordered the cocktail never have i had such a drink.... £6.75 it had a cherry in the bottom & was about 125mls i ordered pudding, 2 minutes latter you had sold out so i went without £186.00 for 6 people we were not charged for the chips first time i have not left a cash tip ever!!!"

  • "Great food in a very relaxed setting with friendly and attentive staff."

  • "This was a 90 minute journey for a lunch for 5 people for my daughter's 21st. She's a fan of Hugh's approach. Staff friendly and helpful. We are a vegetarian family though my 18yr old son occasionally eats chicken out. So... vegetable mezze board was a lovely starter, fresh with strong flavours. Polenta (we were able to request it without blue cheese) was tasty. Mushroom stew okish. Squash stew with lentils was tasteless. My son had slow cooked chicken in a bun which he found tasteless and greasy. We all agreed that one of the best dishes was the chips. On the way out we bought Homity pies and Spinach pie from the deli. These were great, full of flavour, texture, with light pastry. Would I return? Unlikely."
    dined on 10/10/2014
  • "My view is warped by the fact that I've just been in the Canteen the previous weekend (Sat) for my birthday which was an amazing experice that I thouroughly enjoyed: exceptional food (particularly the vegetarian options - Polenta with blue cheese amazing, the cuttle fish with fennel delicious and the wild mushroom main just perfect, and the spelt pudding heavenly), friendly and warm efficient service, perfect ambience. This set the bar quite high. We've come back during the week for the "cuban night" with high expectations. There were no "cuban" twists or specials in the menu, the same polenta that had just a hint of blue cheese on Sat this time was now overpowered by it, the Ginger Beer I've ordered didn't came, music was average. Sad."

  • "I had the pork chop which was delicious. A generous size and very tender. The quality of the carrots and beetroot was very good. However my partner's squash was a big disappointment. He said it was dry and tough and abandoned the dish after only a few mouthfuls. To give your staff due credit they were extremely apologetic and replaced the dish with the mushroom casserole, but the magic of the birthday celebration evening was spoilt. I noticed that the man at the table behind us also had the squash. he didn't complain as we did but he left about half of it. However the music, a cuban singer/pianist and guitarist, were excellent. So, music 10 of of 10, service good but food most disappointing. Shame."

  • "We enjoyed the canteen ambience, and the informality well suited a family lunch with a lively 2-year old. Our high expectations of River Cottage cuisine were not disappointed - interesting dishes, well presented, slightly quirky! Service at the table was excellent, but it was let down by long delays from the kitchen even though the restaurant was not particularly busy."

  • "Ate here on Thursday, 02/10/14 in a party of four. Food was hit and miss with the starters of polenta being a bowl full of polenta, tasting like semolina, with a few small chunks of blue cheese thrown in. Mains were excellent as was the starter of mackerel. Service was good with one pleasant waitress and one quiet waitress. Sweets were limited but the truffles with cider brandy were good value..All in all not a bad experience but nothing made you want to hurry back."

  • "Great affordable menu which covered all tastes and those seeking vegetarian/vegan diets. Simple foods with amazing flavours. Couldn't stop eating the divine bread. Service was slick and very friendly. You felt incredibly comfortable and wanting to stay to try out the evening menu."
    dined on 30/09/2014
  • "Basic stuff, very eco friendly I am sure but not very interesting. The seafood platter is seasonal so you can have an awful lot of mackerel & smoked fish which is overwhelming. The speltotto is awful, dense, yellow and tasteless. The gnocchi is great, flavour full and great texture. The lamb was pink and well flavoured and the chips crisp and light. Pavlova and lemon meringue pie were delicious, again seasonal berries & apple which was super. There does seem to be a lot of meat if you order it! Wine is not expensive and not good either. Don't waste money on flavoured gins, they taste of ordinary gin & nothing more. The elderberry fizz is excellent though. Service friendly."

  • "My wife and I have been to the Riverside Cottage restaurant in Axminster a few times, and have never left disappointed. Although some may say a little expensive, but "you get what you pay for". Quality locally sourced food, excellently cooked and always served with a smile."

  • "This is the 3rd time I have been to River Cottage Canteen, but the first for lunch. At first glance the menu doesn't have many choices but it's only lunch and all the dishes looked delicious as they went past me to other diners. I had the seafood stew-absolutely delicious! The fish was so fresh you could taste the sea! My husband had the belly of pork and stirfried vegetables, The meat just melted in your mouth and the vegetables had that just-cooked crispness that complimeted the soft pork perfectly. I can't wait to reurn to River Cottage canteen soon!"
    dined on 27/09/2014
  • "We arrived quite early for our table but it was no problem and we were seated straight away. The waitress bought us some bread and dips which we enjoyed very much.. The meals were superb and very tasty and the service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant surroundings were very unusual and added to the experience. Would highly recommend"

  • "Its our second visit to River Cottage Axminster for lunch. Its a great space serving no nonsense flavoursome food. Our only complaint was that fish and chips came with grilled fish - we expected battered fish as we saw so many other 'battered' plates being served around us - apparently a starter. Our waiter also failed to point this out - but again our fault as we took it for granted rather than reading the menu."
    dined on 26/09/2014
  • "We visited on 25th September, had a great three course meal plus two bottles of wine, £120 for two people. The food as always was excellent, great flavours and locally-sourced - particularly liked the blackboard showing all their local suppliers - nice touch. Even better there was live music - four piece who played great folk/americana style, some classics and some by unknown (to us) artists. Excelent, made for a great evening hence the second bottle of wine !!"
    dined on 25/09/2014
  • "A very nice evening with a real buzz about the place. The food was very healthy apart from the chocolate mousse which was absolutely brilliant. The service was very friendly although there seemed to be some confusion over which table should get which dishes which was entertaining. I did find the main course slightly disappointing though, for me the flavours didn't quite work and the vegetables could have been crisper, it was a stir fry. Overall we thought the meals we had were different from most restaurants and could have been great but in practice they were ok."
    dined on 23/09/2014
  • "Delicious rabbit ragu, ve meze board, and brownie fool to share!"
    dined on 21/09/2014
  • "We had a very tasty, very relaxed meal. My seafood broth was fantastic - it tasted like I was eating the fish that I'd seen on the fishing boats at Lyme Regis that morning; I probably was!! It was great to buy some cheese and chutney from the deli counter to take home for a midnight feast too!"
    dined on 20/09/2014
  • "We high expectations of River cottage Canteen, the restaurant looked very nice and had a big airy main room, which had the wow factor. Two of our group have dietary needs, which the menu was struggling to help them with. As our meal turned up, the. We're told their food did contain gluten, so they had to choose something else. They got a bowl of cabbage each, dressed with butter???? The menu is very small, and there wasn't many dishes that really excited me. My friend who is ordered fish got a a bone stuck in her throat. She ended up going to A&E to get it removed, the manager was very concerned. She did give us a reduction in our final bill."
    dined on 20/09/2014
  • "I was expecting so much and was left wanting. We visited for lunch and there were only 4 main course options on the menu. So not fancying veggie or fish - I opted for the chicken. It was shredded chicken served in a bun with rock hard chips and few leaves. There was far too many carbs on the plate with the massive bun and chips. Personally I would have enjoyed the chicken in a wrap with a lovely salad. Hubby had the pork which was tasty and was served loads of veg. It was a complete opposite to my dish as there were no carbs at all. No rice, no noddles, no pots and no bread. The chef clearly hadn't got a clue on how to make crispy crackling as it was rock solid and black. So disappointed we didn't bother with pud. Deli is fab though."
    dined on 20/09/2014
  • "Food was small portions, lacking in flavor, the fish was flavor less and everything was coated in oil, venue was not very clean, staff were friendly, but very very expensive for what we had. Feel that they are trading off the name,"
    dined on 17/09/2014
  • "I ordered the chicken roast and I would never order chicken in a restaurant before but I knew it would be a high quality from River Cottage. It didn't fail to please, lots of gravy and we go extra veg which wasn't put as an extra on the bill. The service was good too. Very happy and would recommend."

  • "Being great fans of HFW we expected great things at the canteen in Axminster . We were not disappointed in the slightest. The meal was excceptional . Our starter was a meze presented on a slate, which we shared , followed by a traditional sunday roast lunch. The standard of food was very impressive . The service was personal and friendly. In summary a very satisfying experience. A credit to HFW and all at River Cottage. Thanks."

  • "I went to River Cottage - Axminster with my family for a birthday meal. The whole experience was wonderful, food and service was excellent. In a vibrant and friendly atmosphere. Prices were a few pounds above good pub prices, but the food was definitely a cut above and well worth it. Every member of our group thoroughly enjoyed their meal and we are keen to come back. I would recommend the meat platter and the venison ragu. Enjoy."

  • "Delicious food and very attentive staff, we ate far too much! :)"

  • "Open, airy surroundings, fabulous food, unusual combinations. Very attentive staff. Will be going back time and again!"
    dined on 13/09/2014
  • "This was not about food - although the food was excellent (probably the best Sunday Lunch we've ever had !!), melt in the mouth pork roast with fantastic fresh veg, chorizo stuffing balls in a mind-blowing gravy. It was not about the location - what a beautiful place, nestling in a scenic valley. It was not about roaming around the farm, taking pics of all those TV places and loving the pigs and cows before sitting down in the lovely high-ceilinged barn for lunch. It was about people ! The staff were really welcoming and friendly and the other 60 people there with us were all very nice. We were sitting next to people we'd never met and getting to know them over our relaxed 2 hour lunch. A truly memorable occasion."
    dined on 13/09/2014
  • "This was our third visit and it just gets better and better! My Husband and I shared a fish platter starter which was delicious in every way, then I had Pork belly cooked to melt in the mouth, while my Husband had steak, again cooked to perfection! Being indulgent we had a side of the nicest chips I've ever eaten! We finished with a chocolate mousse cake each and we both agreed it was the tastiest pud we've ever had! The service was brilliant and we love the rustic feel of the place. We have made it a tradition now to travel down for our Wedding Anniversary Meal every year! Cannot fault this place, thank you! :)"
