Diner Reviews
  • "Positive: Food was delicious and portions were generous - chips deserve a special mention as they were fabulously crispy and utterly moreish! Menu was rather limited, but I appreciate that this is part of the seasonal approach/ethos adopted by the restaurant. Staff were cheery, efficient and hard working. Negative: Wine was very expensive given the quality."

  • "Really enjoyed it, decent vegetarian selection, great quality and a nice relaxed venue. Staff were pleasant and food was prompt. Not cheap but definitely worth going."

  • "The unobtrusively efficient service impressed us - something you don't notice unless it is not there. All the staff were really helpful and attentive. On the food for Sat 15th - The pork amalgamation of bits on the meat together board was completely tasteless and the spelt pudding was too much like rice pudding, otherwise the food was great. This was our second visit - both times bringing friends for a treat and the car journey is over 30mins but we will come again with great pleasure."

  • "We dined at RC on a Thursday night, 13th November when there was music on. We were told beforehand it was a music night but we didn't know the type of music. It certainly didn't add to the ambience and in fact we left quickly so we didn't have to listen any more. Maybe the sound system wasn't up to it or was totally out of balance. We have dined there before when there was no music and it was infinitely better. The service is excellent, as is the food but I think the drinks are overpriced. We would eat there again but would definitely avoid music nights."

  • "We're River Cottage regulars - because it's consistently good on every important aspect to us: Quality and source of food; friendly efficient service; great atmosphere."

  • "Looked forward very much to dinner at the River Cottage Canteen, and not in the slightest disappointed. Nice, simple decor, very friendly, welcoming staff, excellent atmosphere. The food was first class, some interesting dishes and those we sampled were beautifully cooked and presented. While we both had meat dishes for our main course, pork chop and slow braised beef cheek, and both were delicious, the vegetables that accompanied them were just as memorable, roasted artichoke and root vegetables, roasted beets, kale and plain mash. They were some of the best cooked and flavoursome vegetables we've ever eaten and made the meal."

  • "Good food, pleasant staff not rushed despite a late lunch"

  • "Lovely seasonal, locally sourced menu. Plenty of choices for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Food was amazing, lovely relaxed setting where you can take your time, think family farmhouse kitchen. Servers were friendly, poilte and efficient. Would thoroughly recommend."

  • "Sunday lunch at River Cottage, Axminster was an enjoyable experience. Friendly and informal approach to service, very good quality food and pretty good value for money. A good selection of vegetarian options with a fairly limited choice of meat dishes, but cooked well. The starter - smoked mackerel - was excellent and the pudding selsection was very good too. Overall a good experience."

  • "although we really enjoyed our dining experience at the canteen in axminster we thought that the vegetarian options were very bland and the main meal not very good value for money. the meat eaters in our party thought both starter and main courses were excellent. the service and staff were excellent made us feel very welcome."

  • "We had planned a visit in advance already before coming to uk for 8 days visit in both London and Dorset. When arriving at River Cottage canteen we immediately felt at home and welcome. It was difficult to choose between the many good options on the menu and we had a very good experience at the place with smoked mackerel and creamy polenta as starters. For our main dishes er had rich autumn dishes with beef cheeks and pork chops. Indeed nice."

  • "Overall experience was very good. Axminster is a bit of a nightmare for parking - allow plenty of time to find a car park"

  • "Always wanted to visit the Canteen - not disappointed. Loved the building, staff were helpful and friendly, food was delicious. Quirky town for a 'not run-of-the-mill' eating experience."

  • "We enjoy the ambience - friendly atmosphere and service. We can always find something new and tasty - this combined with good value makes it a pleasure to dine here. The fact that it is 15 minutes from the lovely seaside spots of Beer, Sidmouth and Seaton make it a lovely day out."

  • "Could have eaten loads from the menu as it looked so appetising. Really helpful, friendly staff"

  • "A lively, unpretensious restaurant; no need to dress to the nines but you could if you wanted to! A comfortable, easy going atmosphere despite it being a sizeable barn-like space with wooden tables and an assortment of different kinds of chairs. Pitchers of water offered automatically without the need for expensive bottled stuff. Very good, fresh, often excellent, reasonably priced, food served by well trained, likeable staff. This is my third visit in a matter of weeks and it is consistent for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner."

  • "We had understandably high expectation but were concerned over some negative reviews. We worried needlessly as the staff made us very welcome, the variety of menu good (incl child friendly), cooked to perfection, very good value. Catered for gluten free superbly."
    dined on 31/10/2014
  • "Great service, as usual, but lots of empty tables, unlike previous years (annual visit in half term week). Polenta starter was not hot enough, making it like a lukewarm savoury semolina and mushroom stew pretty bland with rock hard herb dumplings. Didn't bother with dessert on that basis. However my co diners enjoyed their food greatly. Children selection bit of a cop out. Shame as staff are lovely."

  • "My wife and I came with high expectations which were partly met. We dined on two successive evenings. Our starters of fish cakes and pork and rabbit rillet were good except for having to scrape the heavy layer of sea salt off the rillet on the second night. The beef cheek was overly seasoned by the marinade and although tender (and being from New Zealand we are used to the five spice used) it would have been a lot better if the meat could have still been tasted rather than just being a carrier for the marinade. The pork chop obviously started off as a fine cut of meat as how else could it still be chewable when cooked to the point of being very dry! Note: when the natural juice has been cooked out of meat a lot of flavour has also been lost."

  • "We love the rustic nature of the food and restaurant and the fact there is always something interesting to try. We took the children this time age 3 and 5 and the food for them was simple but delicious and a sensible portion size. So great for couples and family meals alike!!"

  • "Fabulous food, fabulous location and very friendly staff. Food was of a high quality and bread with dipping oils to start was AMAZING! Would definately recommend! Looking forward to trying other canteen and deli locations now :)"

  • "Our first visit was a great experience. Food was very well prepared and not your normal restaurant choices so wonderful to try things like cuttlefish and ox cheeks , friendly (both waiting staff and chefs) and efficient service and pretty good value for the quality and quantity. A big thumbs up from us."
    dined on 23/10/2014
  • "We had to wait some time to place our food order Two of us ha dRabbit Stew with bacon and turnips It was rather tasteless, tepid in temperature and over cooked"
    dined on 23/10/2014
  • "We had read previous reviews about slow service but found the food arrived in good time. The food was well cooked and very good. We were able to have all 3 courses and enjoyed the fact that we were able to choose options that we would not normally see."
    dined on 21/10/2014
  • "sort the staff out, she didn't reflect the efficiency that you try and portray.having eaten here about 2 yrs ago, we were really looking forward to a top quality lunch. how disappointed were we! the waitress was so full of herself, that she didn't feel the need to work at an efficient pace, struting about like a pea-hen, who had obviously not of rushing. The front of house manager [?] who walked us to our table had explained that a party of 22 were ahead of us, so there may be a delay. This wasn't the problem, the menus arrived, the waitress didn't. we wanted to order drinks, no waitress. what was suitable fort a veggie, no waitress to ask. Starters/sharing plate arrives, had to ask for bread deep fried roasters!!!!"

  • "This is our second visit to the Canteen, excellent food as before staff attentive and helpful. Would definately visit again. Please do not visit the Canteen if you are expecting cheap fast food because this would not be the place for you."

  • "Excellent food and service with excellent vegetarian dishes."
    dined on 17/10/2014
  • "We enjoyed a delicious light lunch at The River Cottage in Axminster. Delicious bread and dipping oil was presented while we waited for the main event which was a unctuous squash soup and a crab salad. Both were first rate. Some great organic beers and ciders were also available. Well worth the trip. Just a mention for the coffee too which was excellent!"
    dined on 17/10/2014
  • "Absolutely delicious food, superb friendly and efficient service, but the size of "bigger" portions is inconsistent: my gurnard with chickpeas was far smaller than my friend's merguez/lamb burger & chips - and I had to steal half of her burger-bun to mop up the delicious juices (chickpeas were nicely al dente, so unsuitable for mopping purposes)"
    dined on 17/10/2014
  • "We have eaten before, bu unfortunately this time, no one had a dish that really felt complete or worked, and some of the food was just poor. The Gurnard fillet I had was overcooked by a long way, and it sat on top of chickpeas which were badly cooked and seasoned and some bits of chorizo. It was strange and I would have thought it a one-off but there was a similar story with others we ate with - really poor soup which was not seasoned at all and didn't taste at all of squash, another overcooked fish dish and a fairly boring rabbit stew. The sides like bread, chips and salad were nice, but obviously that's not why you go there. The staff were fine, but not particularly friendly, and I was a bit embarrassed for building it up to my family."
    dined on 17/10/2014
  • "we had a very nice lunch there this week. food was good, and at a great price, good service, not too many people there, would have been nice though"
    dined on 15/10/2014
  • "Although we enjoyed the food it was no better than our own Sunday Lunch. The venue is terrific and it is encouraging to eat ingredients that are Provenanced. Staff were helpful (the recommendation of local cider was excellent) but our coffee came 15 minutes before our pudding which was irritating. Other pluses; the menu range is small but well appointed, they offer tap water, it's great for kids, there's loads of space for disabled. Other minuses; we believe our own local free range pork to be better quality, the chicken and pork were a little dry. We dined using a voucher given to us by our family and the place is such good value that we can afford to go again using the other half. We'd love to give this restaurant a go in the evening."
    dined on 12/10/2014
  • "This was our 6th visit we bought 4 friends with us, have always loved our visit, however would go again.... The menu was not over seasonal, the service was slow to the point by the time the side of chips came out all mains were finished!!! The waitress said she would take one of the largers of the bill (it didnt taste good) she didnt. I had the slow cooked beef for £18. It was lovely and soft fell apart but was tasteless!! I ordered the cocktail never have i had such a drink.... £6.75 it had a cherry in the bottom & was about 125mls i ordered pudding, 2 minutes latter you had sold out so i went without £186.00 for 6 people we were not charged for the chips first time i have not left a cash tip ever!!!"

  • "This was a 90 minute journey for a lunch for 5 people for my daughter's 21st. She's a fan of Hugh's approach. Staff friendly and helpful. We are a vegetarian family though my 18yr old son occasionally eats chicken out. So... vegetable mezze board was a lovely starter, fresh with strong flavours. Polenta (we were able to request it without blue cheese) was tasty. Mushroom stew okish. Squash stew with lentils was tasteless. My son had slow cooked chicken in a bun which he found tasteless and greasy. We all agreed that one of the best dishes was the chips. On the way out we bought Homity pies and Spinach pie from the deli. These were great, full of flavour, texture, with light pastry. Would I return? Unlikely."
